AXES AT THE GATES
Nebuzaradan marches on Jerusalem ready for war — but Heaven doesn’t make it easy.
Iron axes fail. Babylon trembles. The general fears he is about to meet the fate of Sennacherib, crushed by the G-d of Israel before he ever reaches the gates.
Then comes the Heavenly decree: the hour has arrived.
With the “dull edge,” the gates finally yield. What follows is carnage in the streets of Jerusalem and flames consuming the Beit HaMikdash itself. But just as Nebuzaradan swells with triumph, a Divine voice thunders back:
“You burned a Temple already burned.”
Sanhedrin 96b delivers a devastating lesson on arrogance, destruction, Divine judgment, and the terrifying truth that history’s greatest conquerors may be nothing more than instruments in a far greater plan.
A haunting daf exploring the collision between human violence and Divine destiny.
