Episode Three: Choosing to Count
Exempt from Sefira | Electing to Participate

The third installment of Counting with Precision, focuses on the unobligated who might voluntarily commit to participating in Sefirat HaOmer — as its uniquely spelled out in the Alter Rebbe’s Shulchan Aruch (Orach Chaim 489).

In this segment, we examine who is exempt from the obligation of this mitzvah, and why a time-bound nature might define that exemption. From there, we move on to explore the implications of voluntarily accepting an otherwise unwarranted obligation, along with the binding force of commitment undertaken by choice.

Finally, we turn to the tension between addition and subtraction. Can unnecessary expansion of obligation inadvertently replicate the sacred impact of Sefira sanctity?

See how the Alter Rebbe’s exacting syntax and careful formulation can shed brilliant light on this debated issue.

By paying careful attention to the legal language as well as the conceptual structure, participants will develop a clear and foundational understanding of these principles.

As previously, the discussion will extend beyond the orbit of technical halacha to include the broader theme of chosen responsibility — clarifying the impact electing to go beyond the call of duty has on one’s personal growth during the Sefirah period.

This episode has been dedicated by Felix and Rita Zilnik to commemorate the Yahrzeit of Rita’s father, Yona ben Dovid ז״ל.
