Tom’s Talmud Tisch | Tractate Megillah · Chapter One · Daf 7b
Episode Eleven: Feast Gone Too Far — Part II

Having completed our exploration of mishloach manot — defining its nature, scope, and halachic parameters — we moved on to the traditional merrymaking that culminates in Se’udat Purim: the celebratory feast marked by fine food, quality wine, and the mitzvah of intoxication.

In the previous episode (Feast Gone Too Far — Part I), we examined a Purim feast that ended in shocking tragedy – when a pious participant had to be miraculously resuscitated. Unsurprisingly, the revived guest declined a repeat invitation, wary of once again tempting fate.

In that session, we sought to clarify what form of joy could possibly justify such risk. Yet despite several compelling and fascinating explanations, we were left unsettled – still probing how a sacred Purim celebration could accommodate such extreme behavior, and how such a fatal consequence could even have occurred.

In Part Two, we return to the scene for deeper investigation. After carefully reviewing and reassessing earlier conclusions, we will break through the conceptual barriers with an extraordinary and exhilarating novel explanation from the Rebbe – an approach that fully illuminates and demystifies this enigmatic and puzzling Talmudic narrative.

This eleventh installment of our ongoing Purim mini-series has been generously sponsored by Sharon Adler and Dr. Martin Kushner to honour the recently observed Shloshim of Sharon’s mother, Fayga Gittel bas Moshe OBM.
