EXTREME MAKEOVER: Temple Edition ~ Laws on G-d’s Residence of Choice Rambam: Beit HaBechira. Chapter 7; 14b
Episode #60 – “TEMPLE CITY PLANTING PROHIBITIONS” We continue to explore the defining hallmarks of holiness in Judaism’s most Sacred City, Jerusalem! Per previous episodes, the municipality housing the Beit HaMikdash is uniquely situated to facilitate Temple-centric Mitzvot and thrice annually host the Holiday Pilgrimages. This meant that both a high level of cleanliness, and respect as well as an equally high state of Ritual Purity was required.
Life in the city had to honour the Shechina and be naturally conducive to maintaining a pristine and elevated state of Spiritual Purity. To this end, our Sages enacted various Gardening Regulations, Planting and Farming Restrictions. Plus, Garbage Dumps were banned, and rigorous building codes were enacted to prevent additional possible hazards of Ritual Impurity.
